Beach & Bush: The Southern Road Trip
Drive the southern circuit from Dar es Salaam: Mikumi, Ruaha and the Udzungwa rainforest, then fly to Mafia Island to swim with whale sharks and finish on Zanzibar.
Day by day
- Day 1
Arrive in Dar es Salaam
Pick-up at the airport and a night by the ocean in Dar es Salaam.
- Days 2–3
Mikumi
A six-hour drive on good roads, spotting wildlife along the way, then game drives on the Mkata floodplain.
- Days 4–6
Ruaha
Two full days in Ruaha, looking for lion, elephant and kudu along the Great Ruaha River.
- Days 7–8
Udzungwa waterfalls
Hike through the rainforest to Sanje Falls. Bring a swimsuit for the pools at the top.
- Days 9–12
Mafia Island
Fly from Dar to Mafia. Swim with whale sharks (in season), snorkel the marine park or walk the long empty beaches.
- Days 13–15
Zanzibar
Fly to Zanzibar for sunsets on the north-west coast and a day in Stone Town.
- Day 16
Fly home
Transfer to the airport for your flight home.
