Ngorongoro Crater
A lost world inside a volcano
The largest unbroken volcanic caldera on earth: 600 metres deep, about 20 kilometres across, with lion, buffalo, flamingo and black rhino living on its floor. Maasai herders still graze their cattle in the highlands around the rim.
Highlights
- Full day on the crater floor
- One of the best places in Tanzania to see black rhino
- Highland walks with Maasai guides
- Olduvai Gorge, the cradle of mankind
A day on the crater floor is one of the great wildlife days anywhere in Africa. We descend early, before the crowds, with a picnic lunch by the hippo pool. Nights are cool up on the rim, so pack a warm layer.
Ngorongoro sits between the Serengeti and Lake Manyara, so it fits naturally into any northern safari. Close by is Olduvai Gorge, one of the most important sites for understanding human origins.
