Tarangire
Elephants among ancient baobabs
Often overlooked in the shadow of the Serengeti, Tarangire is one of our favourite parks. In the dry season hundreds of elephants gather along the Tarangire River beneath giant baobab trees.
Highlights
- Huge elephant herds in the dry season
- Baobab trees that are hundreds of years old
- Over 500 bird species
- Walking safaris outside the park
Tarangire is about two hours from Arusha, which makes it a perfect first stop. Within minutes of the gate you will be among gazelle, buffalo and giraffe, and the elephant herds here are some of the largest in East Africa.
The park has an unusual mix of habitats, from grassland and woodland in the north to swamps and low hills in the south, and more than 500 bird species. Walking safaris and night drives are possible in the surrounding conservation areas.
